Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori Toi Onepū (Sand Art) Installation

Mount Main Beach will host a large toi onepū (sand art) installation this weekend to celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. The event, led by our founder, Blanche McMath, will feature sand artist Kenrick Smith creating the Māori Language Week logo on Saturday. The installation, aligned with the 2024 theme Ake, Ake, Ake, symbolises te reo Māori as Aotearoa’s “forever language.”

McMath highlighted that sand art, like the tides, represents the resilience of te reo Māori, and the event invites the community to show support for the language. The creation will be captured on film by Tana Whineray, helping spread the message of language revitalisation.

McMath emphasised that this initiative goes beyond just art, standing as a powerful statement of resilience and pride for te reo Māori in Tauranga Moana and beyond.
