Tauranga Moana Land Wars

We were engaged by Ngāti Ranginui to develop branding and collateral for the 160th Commemoration of the Tauranga Moana Land Wars. Our approach was to provide a link between the Battle of Pukehinahina and Te Ranga.

The 160th Commemoration of Pukehinahina tohu was inspired by the Pukehinahina flag. Each of the elements are drawn as whakairo, with unaunahi (scales) symbolising strength and protection. The bold lines within the design serve as visual markers of resilience and fortitude, echoing the spirit of those who stood and faced adversity. The logotype is strong and robust looking and invokes old world feelings. It represents the pā, with the flag flying high above, emphasising its prominence.

To provide a link between the two land war commemorations we have used a variation of the same tohu for the Battle of Te Ranga with the focus being on the crimson red colour palette to reflect the mood and honour those that lost their lives at this battle.

In addition to branding, we created a range of collateral including invitations, movie tickets, billboards, social media tiles, pins, lanyards, event programmes, and a media wall.

To increase awareness we developed a Tauranga Land Wars website entailing information about each battle, the commemoration event programmes, and a photo gallery.
