Our Tohu
Our tohu symbolises the uniting of our two agencies Platform Agency and Tohu Studio. They are made up of two koru elements, one a T and the other a P. The koru symbolises growth, and transformation and represents our journey as a company from our beginning in 2013 with Platform to today and the addition of Tohu Studio. It represents our commitment to partnership and kotahitanga as well as to our nation’s own ongoing cultural transformation. Together our two koru elements form a mangopare (hammerhead shark) a kaitiaki of the sea and a symbol of strength and determination and our commitment to our clients and the kaupapa and projects we are privileged to work on.
Our name
Tohu Studio derives its name from the reo Māori word for sign, symbol, and brand. In Māori culture tohu were passed down through kōrero tuku iho – – karakia, pūrākau, whakataukī and waiata. The inspiration of the name also comes from the Hebrew term “tohu wa-bohu,” which appears in the Book of Genesis, symbolising the state of the world before creation – formless and empty, Te Kore. This name is a profound reflection of our core ethos at Tohu Studio. Just as the universe began from a state of untapped potential, we believe that every creative endeavour starts with an unshaped idea, a blank canvas waiting to be transformed. Our agency embodies the spirit of ‘tohu’, embracing the boundless possibilities inherent in the creative process. We see ourselves as modern-day alchemists, turning the formless into form, the chaos into order, the unseen into the seen. Tohu Studio is not just our name; it is our commitment to exploring the depths of imagination, crafting unique and groundbreaking ideas, and bringing them into reality. Our name is a homage to the creative process itself, a reminder that from the void comes the most extraordinary creations.
