Aukaha News
Radio Tainui, Moana Radio, and Te Arawa FM—three iwi radio stations with a combined history of over 50 years—secured funding from Te Māngai Pāho to launch Aukaha, a regional Māori news service delivering both visual and audio content. The challenge was to create a brand identity that honoured their shared kaupapa while reflecting strength, unity, and the revitalisation of Te Reo Māori.
Brand Identity
Graphic Design
The Aukaha logo embodies resilience and connection through key visual elements:
Kaokao
Three kaokao patterns represent Tainui, Tauranga Moana, and Te Arawa, symbolising protection and strength—like warriors caught in haka.
Strong Typography
A modern, clean sans-serif typeface with sharp lines reinforces the idea of remaining staunch and steadfast.
Waka Lashings
Integrated into the logotype, these elements symbolise strengthening, repairing, and reinforcing Te Reo Māori.
Blue Gradient
A visual nod to the moana and awa, reflecting the connections of the three stations.
The Aukaha brand is a bold and unified representation of this groundbreaking news service. It captures the strength of the kaupapa, honouring the legacy of iwi radio while forging a path forward for the revitalisation of Te Reo Māori through modern media.
